Isn't the cable I linked a TRS cable (balanced) with separate left and right inputs that terminate to a 3.5 mm jack (unbalanced)? Do you mean that I need something that is balanced connect to the computer itself? Also, apologies for the silly question, but I am not sure if I follow. You'd need a splitter that delivers a balanced XLR or TRS signal. Thanks, folks!The speakers require a balanced signal (and balanced, TRS 1/4" or XLR connectors) at the input the cable you're considering doesn't provide that. Perhaps if I had paid more attention in physics class, I would know the answer to this myself! Haha. I imagine there would be a reduction in sound quality for this setup versus going through a proper audio card, but would the internal MacBook hardware suffice for these purposes? That being said, making sure that I am not making an electrical mess that can ruin the laptop or speakers (particular the laptop) is my main concern. issues with connecting active monitors directly to a laptop. Meaning, that there won't be any power/electricity/etc.
What I wanted to know is if I will be "safe" with this setup.
This is basically to give me an upgrade over the built-in laptop speakers. These will just be used for general listening (Spotify, YouTube, etc.), and not for recording or mixing (I use my desktop setup in its own room for that). I was looking to use a cable like this to connect the speakers to the stereo port of the laptop: I am looking to connect a pair of JBL 305P studio monitors directly to the new Retina MacBook Air.
